Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your questions about CBT-i and Fraser Valley Insomnia and Sleep Therapy

How do I know if I need CBT-i therapy for my insomnia?

That’s an important question. You can start by taking this insomnia questionnaire. If your scores suggest you have Insomnia, CBT-i can be very helpful. You may also wish to try improving your sleep hygiene factors to see if that helps before starting therapy. If you still have questions, I would encourage you to book a free consult. It’s no commitment and I should be able to offer an opinion on treatment options.

What should I expect in our first session?

If possible, prior to our first session I will send you a sleep tracker and you will begin to track your sleep data. Our first session will involve a review of this data and your sleep history and current context. Then, based on this, we will figure out an achievable treatment plan. By the end you should feel like you’ve got a strong idea of what to expect and how we will go about treating your insomnia.

How much is CBT-i? Do you take insurance?

CBT-i is billed per session at $160.00/clinical hour. To make this more affordable, I offer a flexible fee model that reduces the cost of therapy based on appointment availability and sessions. Click here to learn more.

CBT-i therapy is an ideal way to use your health insurance coverage as the treatment duration (6-8 sessions) means many plans cover the whole treatment. CBT-i is covered by any insurance provider who covers service provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Direct billing is available for Sun Life and Pacific Blue Cross.

Group CBT-i is an affordable alternative to individual sessions. Sign up for the waitlist here to be notified of when our next group will be run.

Limited sliding scale spots are available.

How long and how frequent are sessions?

CBT-i is a structured therapy program intended to be delivered across 6 to 8 weekly sessions. The majority of people see results within this timeframe.

Sessions are 50 minutes.

Of course, the treatment duration can change based on your results, meaning more or fewer sessions may be needed.

Are in person or virtual/telehealth sessions covered?

At this time only virtual telehealth sessions are provided. These sessions are provided through our secure confidential HIPPA compliant telehealth platform.

What if I need to rebook/cancel an appointment?

Up until 24 hours before your session, you may cancel or rebook without consequence. If you need to cancel or rebook within 24 hours, a fee may apply, up to the full cost of the session.

Is CBT-i therapy confidential?

Yes! CBT-i is confidential. Meaning I don’t talk to anyone about our work.

However, there are some exceptions.

  • If you or someone else is at serious and imminent risk of harm I am legally bound to take appropriate measures to protect safety, which may mean breaking confidentiality.
  • If information about the abuse or neglect of a minor or vulnerable person is disclosed or strongly suspected.
  • If therapy documents are subpoenaed by the courts.
Can I do CBT-i if I'm already on a sleep medication?

Yes. If you are on a sleep medication or supplement, you are certainly eligible to do CBT-i. To improve the effectiveness of treatment, we will work on a plan to stabilize the administration and dose of any medication and supplements.

What if my insomnia is biologically based? Will CBT-i still help?

Yes. Even if the cause of the initial insomnia was or is a biological (i.e., physiological; e.g., a severe cold, flue, covid), CBT-i can help to treat the maintained insomnia.
