SAD Lamp for Circadian Rhythm: How to Choose One
Before anything else: I don’t sell light therapy lamps, I don’t have an affiliate deal with anyone who does, and nothing in this article earns me a commission. If a device gets named below, it’s because it meets a stated criterion, not because someone paid for the placement.
That matters, because most of what you’ll find when you search “SAD lamp” is a ranked list with a discount code attached.

Seasonal affective disorder shows up in an estimated 1.3 to 3 percent of the population in community studies that use the standard screening tool, and it gets more common the further you live from the equator (Source: Canadian Consensus Guidelines for the Treatment of SAD). Vancouver sits at 49 degrees north. That’s not nothing.
Dr. Raymond Lam, who directs the Mood Disorders Centre at UBC, has spent years correcting a local myth. It’s not the rain that does it. SAD tracks day length and latitude, not cloud cover. He’s described it as a kind of jet lag: your internal clock has drifted out of sync with the actual amount of daylight outside your window.
You might be here for that reason. Or you might be here because you have insomnia, someone told you to “get a light box,” and you typed the words into a search bar with no idea what you were looking for.
Both reasons are valid. They call for slightly different things.
What a SAD lamp does to your sleep-wake cycle
Your eyes contain a set of light-sensitive cells that don’t help you see. Their job is to report brightness levels to your suprachiasmatic nucleus, a cluster of neurons in your brain that functions as your master clock.
That clock uses light as its main timing cue. When it gets a strong, well-timed signal, it adjusts your melatonin release accordingly, and melatonin is what shifts your body between wakefulness and sleep.
A SAD lamp is a way of sending that signal on purpose, at an intensity your brain can’t ignore. The standard clinical protocol calls for 10,000 lux, used for 20 to 30 minutes, within the first hour of waking (Source: Mayo Clinic).
That protocol was built and tested for one specific condition: seasonal depression. Insomnia patients are often handed the same number without anyone explaining that it was designed for something else.
SAD lamp vs. circadian-shift tool: two different jobs, one device
Here’s the conflation worth untangling.
“SAD lamp” is a name that comes from Seasonal Affective Disorder, a mood disorder with its own diagnostic criteria. The 10,000-lux, 20-to-30-minute, first-hour-of-waking protocol is the one that’s been tested against that specific condition.
If your goal is treating diagnosed or suspected SAD, that’s a conversation for your family doctor, not for a blog post about buying a lamp. It sits outside what CBT-I addresses, and I’d rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
Most of my patients aren’t chasing a SAD diagnosis. They’re chasing a shifted clock: falling asleep at 2 a.m. and hating it, or waking at 4 a.m. and staring at the ceiling.
For that use, the dosing math looks different. Circadian entrainment can happen with lower, more ambient bright light sustained over time. But an acute phase shift, the kind that moves your sleep window, often needs more than 6,000 lux over 30 to 60 minutes.
Six things to check before you buy
Every lamp on the market will tell you it’s bright. Fewer will tell you the one number that matters most.
Lux, and the distance it’s measured at
A lux figure with no stated distance tells you almost nothing.
Light intensity falls off with the square of the distance from the source. Move twice as far from a lamp, and you don’t get half the light. You get roughly a quarter of it.
The most rigorous public standard I’ve found comes from Yale’s Winter Depression Research Clinic, working through the Center for Environmental Therapeutics. Their bar: at least 7,500 lux at 11 inches or less, holding steady even if you tilt your head up, down, left, or right.
Check the spec sheet for a distance, not just a number. If there isn’t one listed, that’s information too.
Screen size and comfort
A small, intensely bright panel can be uncomfortable to sit near, even at the “correct” lux.
A larger, more diffused surface delivering the same intensity is usually easier to tolerate for the full session. This isn’t a minor preference.
A lamp you dread using doesn’t get used consistently. And consistency is the entire mechanism here.
Flicker
Some cheaper LED units, and most older fluorescent ones, flicker at frequencies you won’t consciously notice but your eyes will feel anyway. Headaches and eye strain are the usual complaints.
Check the manufacturer’s specs, or independent test data if it exists, before you commit.
UV filtering and eye safety
Devices built for light therapy filter out UV light. Devices built for tanning or skin conditions mostly don’t, because their whole purpose is UV exposure.
These are different products wearing similar packaging. Buying the wrong one for the wrong reason can damage your eyes.
If you have an existing eye condition, more on that below, but the UV question comes first regardless.
Cost and return policy
Light boxes aren’t regulated by the FDA as SAD treatments, and most Canadian insurance plans won’t cover the cost. You’re likely paying out of pocket.
Individual response to light therapy varies more than manufacturers like to advertise. A reasonable return or trial window matters more than a flashy feature list.
Look for at least a few weeks. Some clinics recommend a full month before deciding whether a device is worth keeping.
When to use it: morning light vs. evening light
This is the part almost nobody explains clearly, and it’s the part that determines whether the lamp helps you.
Morning light nudges your clock earlier. If you fall asleep and wake up later than you’d like, and you recognize yourself as someone who runs “behind” the rest of the world, morning exposure is what shifts that pattern forward.
Evening light nudges your clock later. If you’re waking at 3 or 4 a.m. and can’t get back to sleep, no matter how tired you are, a session of light earlier in the evening can push your body’s schedule back toward something more livable.
Using the wrong timing for your pattern doesn’t just fail to help. It can actively work against the shift you’re trying to make.
If you’re not sure which pattern describes you, that’s a reasonable thing to bring to a CBT-I consultation rather than guess your way through.
Reconciling “no blue light at night” with “get bright light in the morning”
If you’ve read our piece on blue light and pre-sleep arousal, this next part might sound like a contradiction. It isn’t.
The advice to dim your evening light and avoid screens before bed isn’t really about blue light being dangerous. It’s about protecting the contrast between your bright days and your dim nights, because that contrast is the actual signal your clock reads.
Bright mornings and dim evenings. That’s the whole principle, applied at two different ends of the day.
A SAD lamp used first thing in the morning strengthens that contrast. It doesn’t undo the evening advice. It’s the other half of the same idea.
Who should talk to a doctor first
None of this is meant to alarm you. It’s meant to be a genuine checklist, the kind worth reading before you order anything.
- Bipolar disorder, or a family history of it. Rapid or excessive light exposure can, in rare cases, trigger manic symptoms (Source: Mayo Clinic).
- Existing eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or macular degeneration. Talk to your eye specialist before starting.
- Photosensitizing medications. Some prescriptions increase your sensitivity to light. Your pharmacist can tell you in under a minute whether yours is one of them.
If none of these apply to you, you’re clear to move on to buying and using a device. If any of them do, a five-minute conversation with your doctor is worth having before you spend the money.
What to avoid on Amazon
Search “SAD lamp” or “light therapy lamp” on Amazon and you’ll get hundreds of results. Most of them look identical: a white panel, a stock photo of someone smiling at breakfast, a price under $40.
Some of these are fine. Many aren’t. Here’s what tends to separate the two, matched against the criteria above.
- No lux figure at a stated distance. A listing that says “10,000 lux!” with no mention of how far from the panel that’s measured is telling you almost nothing. Look for a manufacturer’s spec sheet that gives you both numbers together.
- No UV filtering mentioned anywhere. If the listing doesn’t say the device filters UV, don’t assume it does. Some cheaper panels are closer to a shop light than a clinical device.
- A tiny bulb marketed as a “lamp.” A small, glary point source isn’t the same thing as a diffused panel delivering the same intensity. If the product photos show something the size of a hockey puck, expect discomfort at the distance the listing recommends.
- Blue-light-only devices sold as “more powerful.” A 2022 meta-analysis led by UBC researchers found little evidence that blue light outperforms standard white light for this purpose. Marketing that leans hard on “blue light science” is leaning on a claim the research doesn’t clearly support.
- No return window, or a return window under two weeks. Response to light therapy varies enough between people that you need real time to tell if a device is working. A generic 14-day Amazon return policy with no extension isn’t much room to judge that.
- Identical listings under five different brand names. This is common with generic dropshipped panels. If a reverse image search turns up the same product photographed from the same angle under three unrelated brand names, treat every specification claim with suspicion.
- Flicker complaints buried in the one-star reviews. Read a handful of the worst reviews before you buy, not just the five-star ones at the top. Headache and eye strain complaints are the pattern to watch for.
None of this means Amazon is off-limits. It means the same six criteria from the section above apply there too, and a low price alone isn’t a reason to skip checking them.
A few lamps that meet the criteria
One more reminder before names get mentioned: no compensation, no discount codes, no tracked links. These are examples that meet the criteria above, not a ranked “best of” list.
Luxor Bright Light Therapy Pyramid (Northern Light Technologies). Delivers 10,000 lux at up to 12 inches, fully UV-filtered, flicker-free, manufactured in Canada. The pyramid shape isn’t just styling. Its large front panel is what lets it hit 10,000 lux at a comfortable distance instead of forcing you to sit close.
Carex Day-Light Elite. Delivers 10,000 lux at 12 to 14 inches, with four selectable brightness settings (10,000 / 5,000 / 2,500 / 1,000 lux), a 4000K colour temperature, and 100 percent UV blocking. This sits in the same Day-Light product line as the Carex Day-Light Classic, the device UBC’s Mood Disorders Centre used in its own registered clinical trial protocol. The Elite is the current flagship in that lineup, with a larger screen and adjustable settings the trial device didn’t have.
Verilux HappyLight. Marketed at up to 10,000 lux. Independent lux testing puts the real output closer to 5,000 lux at 12 inches. That’s not disqualifying. It means you’ll need a longer session at that distance to get an equivalent dose. It’s also the most budget-friendly option of the three, which makes it a reasonable place to start if cost is the deciding factor and you’re comfortable adjusting your session length accordingly.
A general rule for any device beyond these three: look for lux stated at a specific distance, UV filtering, a large enough screen for comfort, and a return window of several weeks rather than a few days.

Light therapy is a supporting layer, not a replacement for CBT-I
A light box can help shift a misaligned clock. It’s one of the better-supported tools available for that specific job.
It is not, on its own, a treatment for chronic insomnia. That’s the same thing we say about sleep hygiene: useful, worth doing properly, and not the actual mechanism that resolves years of poor sleep.
If a lamp helps you fall asleep an hour earlier but you’re still lying awake white-knuckling the clock once you’re in bed, the lamp did its job. The rest of that problem is what CBT-I treats.

Ready to address the insomnia underneath it
A lamp can help retime your clock. It won’t teach your brain to stop treating your bed like a battleground, and that’s the part CBT-I fixes.
