Can You Recover from Sleep Debt? The Randy Gardner Story

In December 1963, a seventeen-year-old named Randy Gardner sat down with two friends in San Diego and settled on a science fair project. They would find out how long a person could stay awake. Randy lost the coin toss, so he would be the one who did not sleep. His friends, Bruce McAllister and Joe Marciano, would take shifts keeping him upright and keeping score.

Eleven days later, on January 8, 1964, Gardner had been awake for 264 hours. He had broken the world record. A Stanford sleep researcher named William Dement had shown up partway through, curious enough to drive down and watch. A Navy medic, Lieutenant Commander John Ross, monitored Gardner's vital signs the whole way through. At a press conference on the lawn outside his parents' house, Gardner snapped at a reporter who would not stop asking the same question. Then he went to a naval hospital, slept almost fifteen hours, woke to use the bathroom, and by most accounts, seemed fine. The story usually ends there, and it gets repeated for a reason: a teenager stayed awake for eleven days and came out the other side more or less intact. It raises an obvious question. Can you recover from sleep debt the way Gardner appeared to, simply by sleeping it off?

Ross's Notes Contradict the Pinball Story

Dement liked to tell people that by day ten, Gardner could still beat him at pinball. It is a good anecdote, and it is the version most retellings settle on: proof that the body is tougher than we think, and that sleep debt is something you simply pay back.

Ross, the medic who tracked Gardner's health day to day, described something rougher. By his account, published later in the sleep research literature and summarized by psychologist Stanley Coren, Gardner grew paranoid around day ten, convinced a radio host was trying to make him look foolish. By day eleven he was expressionless, his speech slurred, and he had to be coaxed to talk at all. Asked to count backward from 100 by sevens, he made it to 65 and stopped. When asked why, he said he had forgotten what he was doing.

One caveat. Gardner's later physical recovery was real. Follow-up sleep studies taken weeks afterward showed no lasting differences. What Ross documented does not undo that. It complicates the idea that the eleven days themselves were consequence-free.

Gardner has told a version closer to Ross's than to Dement's crowd-pleasing anecdote. In a 2024 NPR interview marking the 60th anniversary of the record, he described nausea and memory trouble starting around day three. He also mentioned something the tidy version of the story leaves out entirely: sometime in his fifties, he developed severe insomnia. "About 10 years ago, I stopped sleeping," he told NPR. "I could not sleep. I would lay in bed five, six hours, sleep maybe 15 minutes, then wake up again. I was a basket case."

Sleep Debt Is Not a Simple Ledger

Sleep debt is a useful shorthand. Researchers describe it as the gap between the sleep you need and the sleep you are getting, and it accumulates the way a bill does when you keep making partial payments. The comparison to money is common for good reason. It is intuitive, and it captures something true: you do, in a rough sense, owe your body something back.

Where the comparison breaks down is in what paying it back means. A bank balance updates the moment you make a deposit. Sleep does not work that way. One long night of catch-up sleep can make you feel considerably better without settling the account underneath, because how rested you feel and how well your brain is performing are tracked by two different systems that do not run on the same clock.

Subjective Recovery Outpaces Objective Recovery

This is the part of the sleep debt story most people never hear, and it is well documented in the sleep research literature.

Researchers who study recovery from sleep restriction routinely test two things separately: how sleepy someone says they feel, and how their brain performs on tasks that measure attention and reaction time. In a controlled study of chronic sleep restriction and total sleep deprivation, Yamazaki and colleagues (2021) found that people who had gone through five nights of restricted sleep reported feeling back to normal after just one full night of recovery sleep. Their reaction times told a different story. Measures of sustained attention and response speed were still lagging behind baseline even after four nights of recovery sleep.

The finding

In a separate study, McHill and colleagues (2018) restricted participants to roughly five and a half hours of sleep a night for several weeks and found reaction times that doubled and attention lapses that increased fivefold, with no matching drop in how alert participants said they felt. Their sense of themselves stopped tracking their actual performance.

What that means in practice: if you have spent a week on five hours a night, one excellent night of sleep can make you feel normal within a day. Your attention and reaction time may still be lagging days behind it.

One caveat. Not every study finds the same trajectory. Belenky and colleagues (2003) found that performance under moderate sleep restriction stabilized at a reduced level rather than continuing to decline, and did not fully recover across three nights of recovery sleep. The details shift with age, restriction severity, and study design. The general pattern holds throughout: subjective sleepiness resolves faster than objective performance does.

For anyone running on five or six hours a night and telling themselves they have simply adapted, this is worth sitting with. Adaptation, in the way the research uses the word, does not mean the cost disappeared. It often means the cost became harder to notice.

True Short Sleeper Syndrome Is Rare and Genetic

There is a genuine biological exception to all of this, worth naming clearly so it does not get confused with the situation above.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco identified a mutation in the gene DEC2 in a family of natural short sleepers, whose sleep averaged 6.25 hours a night against 8.06 hours for family members without the mutation. A second gene, ADRB1, was identified a decade later, after years of searching, in a different family. Both mutations are rare. As UCSF's Ying-Hui Fu, who led both discoveries, put it: people with these mutations are not people who trained themselves to need less sleep. They were born this way.

If you suspect you might be one of the rare exceptions, the honest test is not how sharp you feel most days. It is whether you wake without an alarm, stay that way without stimulants, and keep it up for years without health consequences catching up to you. For almost everyone convinced they have adapted to short sleep, the more likely explanation is the one above: the feeling of being fine has outrun the evidence.

Gardner's Later Years Are the Real Ending

Guinness World Records stopped monitoring the sleep deprivation record in 1997, citing the health risks involved. Gardner himself has spent years since telling people not to try what he did. It is not much of a warning if the only story anyone remembers is the pinball game.

What happened to him afterward is less triumphant and more useful: a body that recovered enough to satisfy the instruments of the time, and a mind that, decades later, forgot how to sleep at all. If you are the kind of person who has convinced yourself you are managing fine on too little sleep, his story is not proof that you can. It is a reminder that the proof you are looking for might not show up for years.

TL;DR

Randy Gardner stayed awake 264 hours in 1964 and is usually remembered as proof the body bounces back from sleep loss. He broke the world record as a San Diego high school science fair project, slept almost fifteen hours afterward, and by most public accounts seemed fine.

The popular version leaves out the medic's notes. Lieutenant Commander John Ross, who monitored Gardner throughout, reported paranoia, hallucinatory thinking, and a serious cognitive breakdown by day eleven, a contrast to the more famous anecdote about Gardner winning a game of pinball.

You can recover from sleep debt to a point, but the bank account comparison is incomplete. Sleep debt does accumulate the way a bill does, but paying it back is not instant the way a deposit is. Feeling rested and being recovered run on two different clocks.

Feeling recovered arrives well before your brain is. Research on sleep restriction shows subjective sleepiness returning to normal after a single night of recovery sleep, while measures of attention and reaction time can lag days behind, sometimes with no matching change in how alert someone reports feeling.

True short sleeper syndrome is real but genetically rare. If you are convinced you have adapted to five or six hours a night, the more likely explanation is that you have stopped noticing the cost, not that the cost went away.
